Stupid question, but was this caused by the rear diff locking up?

Looks like it. I remember my grandfather did something kind of similar when he was a kid (he hit a bump while slowing down, and the transmission tried to downshift at the wrong time), but with him the weak point was the driveshaft and it just snapped, leaving everything else intact.
